The theme of the session was to consider the relevance of the context of the diverse experiences of art and culture in India and to examine ways in which managers of cultural institutions and organizations can be steeped in the roots of culture. It was felt essential for managers of such institutions to be sensitized to the spatio-temporal context of cultural objects, namely, the philosophy, the technology, the way of life of its creators, and their expressions

"The success of an arts organization is measured not only by how well it balances its books but by how well it fulfills its artistic mission. Arts managers are constantly challenged to effectively and efficiently do both. In recent years not only have cultural organizations enabled the creation of art, they have also expanded their roles in the community. Museums, ballet companies and symphonies serve as catalysts for economic development, urban renewal, and improved education. Today's arts managers are strategists, financial planners, fund raisers, marketers, educators, personnel specialists and lobbyists."

"Can management enable the artist and specialist to perform well? Sometimes because management was power, there was a distortion in the organization with management usurping the role of controlling and establishing a bureaucracy. This was the very point that had to be addressed in any management education program: how to make management a source of facilitation and creating conditions in the organization in which the artist, the performer can perform and give the finest possible performance and was free from all hassles of administration and management. There was a need for sensitivity to the unique requirements of artists and cultural organizations."

"Behind the spoken language of people is the silent language of the culture of the people, which takes them back to millenniums and also to their region of origins. We are, after all, a country of multi-identities and multi-lingualisms."
